The University of Basel is one of the top-ranked universities globally and among the best in the German-speaking world. The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is internationally recognized as a leading institute in life sciences, known for its groundbreaking research in biology and medicine, including Nobel Prize-winning discoveries.
The Project
The PhD position is part of the research group led by Prof. Knut Drescher at the Biozentrum, focusing on understanding the physics of bacterial infections, specifically related to the development of bacterial biofilms. The project will utilize optical microscopy and light-based imaging techniques to study bacterial biofilms during infections and biofilm growth.
Biofilms are communities of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and are responsible for many chronic infections. This PhD project will explore biofilm formation, growth dynamics, and how they influence human infections, using cutting-edge custom microscopy techniques. The exact scope of the project will be shaped based on the candidate’s strengths and interests.
