Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden
Department: Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC)
Supervisor: Yanjun Zan
Application Deadline: March 10, 2026

Position Overview
Umeå University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in plant science with a focus on plant complex trait genetics. The position is based at the Department of Plant Physiology within the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), one of Europe’s leading research environments for basic plant biology. The project is expected to start in summer 2026 or as agreed. The PhD student will conduct cutting-edge research on the genetic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and post-transcriptomic mechanisms underlying plant responses to environmental stresses such as drought and heat.

Research Focus
The PhD project focuses on:

  • Investigating the genetic basis of plant plasticity in response to environmental stresses using wild Arabidopsis thaliana ecotypes as a model.

  • Understanding the molecular, genomic, and epigenomic mechanisms driving complex trait plasticity.

  • Utilizing advanced techniques such as omics data analysis, gene editing, and computational modeling to develop climate-resilient plants.

  • Exploring research directions in quantitative genetics, molecular biology, computational modeling, or integrative approaches based on candidate interests.

Candidate Profile
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with an academic background in plant genetics, genomics, plant biology, ecology, agronomy, bioinformatics, biotechnology, or a closely related field. Essential skills and knowledge include:

  • Experience with bioinformatic analysis of genomic or transcriptomic data using R, Python, or Bash scripting, including genome assembly, SNP calling, RNA-seq analysis, and data visualization.

  • Strong understanding of genetic principles such as transcription, translation, and post-translational regulation, as well as practical experience in molecular biology techniques.

  • Knowledge of quantitative genetics and plant breeding is an advantage.

The ideal candidate should be a proactive, independent, and reliable team player, with strong organizational skills and the ability to take ownership of their research project.
