Overview of the PhD Position
The University of Helsinki invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Geological Hydrogen Reservoirs as part of the HydRes Project, titled “Finding H₂ – Geological hydrogen reservoirs for sustainable energy production in Finland”. This fully funded doctoral position focuses on advancing the understanding and sustainable utilization of geological hydrogen reservoirs in crystalline bedrock, supporting Finland’s green energy transition.
The HydRes project is a multidisciplinary research initiative conducted in collaboration with the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The project addresses the formation, exploration, renewability, and exploitation of geological hydrogen resources, integrating geochemistry, isotope analysis, geomicrobiology, and modelling techniques.
Research Focus and Responsibilities
The PhD researcher will focus on the geological hydrogen aspects of the project, including:

Integrating microbiological and geochemical data to assess hydrogen potential and sustainability.

Developing diagnostic tools for the evaluation of geological hydrogen reservoirs.

Contributing to the emerging field of renewable hydrogen energy within crystalline bedrock.

Participating in fieldwork campaigns, including sampling from deep drill sites.

Conducting laboratory experiments in isotope geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, and geomicrobiology.

Engaging with a multidisciplinary team for research development and collaboration.

Candidate Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:

MSc degree or equivalent in geology, geochemistry, environmental sciences, microbiology, or a closely related field.

Strong interest in isotope geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, and geomicrobiology.

Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Experience in laboratory or field research is advantageous.

Right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki or willingness to apply for it within six months.

Starting salary: approximately €2,600 per month, with gradual increases as the PhD progresses.

Six-month trial period with the possibility of partial remote work.
