Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the TRANSFORM ERC project.

Project Overview
The TRANSFORM ERC project aims to develop resilient, adaptive multimodal urban transport systems that anticipate disruptions and optimize mobility in real time. Key goals include:
- Designing real-time coordinated demand management frameworks
- Integrating behavioral choice models with network state information
- Optimizing mobility under uncertainty
- Delivering individualized multimodal services that improve efficiency while respecting user preferences
The project focuses on unifying short-term operations and long-term planning, addressing the challenges caused by siloed approaches in traditional urban transport systems.
Research Role
As a PhD candidate, you will:
- Develop the scientific core of real-time multimodal demand management
- Create a scalable modeling and optimization framework capturing dynamic supply-demand feedback
- Integrate behaviorally informed models for user decision-making
- Conduct research advancing both theory and practical applications in transport systems
- Collaborate with the SUM Lab, working alongside domain experts, fellow PhDs, and researchers in optimization, AI, and behavioral modeling
Qualifications & Requirements
Mandatory:
- Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related fields
- Strong knowledge of machine learning, optimization, and discrete choice/behavioral models
- Programming proficiency (Python, C++, Java)
- Excellent communication skills in English
- Ability to work independently and in a team
Desirable:
- Interest in interdisciplinary research
- Contribution to teaching and lab activities
