PhD Project Overview
This PhD project explores climate change adaptation and cooperation in rural Asia from 1945 to the present, combining historical research with insights from social psychology.
As climate risks to agriculture intensify globally, the ability of rural communities to adapt depends strongly on cooperation and social cohesion. This project investigates the historical roots of cooperation in Asian rural societies during the transformative post–World War II period.
The introduction of modern agricultural technologies significantly boosted productivity and incomes but also reshaped political, economic, and social power structures. These changes exposed farmers to new climate-related risks, influencing patterns of cooperation, trust, and conflict.
Through a long-term comparative study of rural Asia, the project examines interactions between climate uncertainty, institutions, and cooperative behavior at the village and household levels. By understanding when cooperation succeeds or breaks down in climate-vulnerable contexts, the research offers valuable lessons for sustainable development and climate resilience worldwide.
