PhD Programme Options
Depending on educational background, candidates may apply for one of two programme structures.
Option A: Regular PhD Programme (5+3 Scheme)
This is a three-year full-time PhD programme for applicants who already hold a degree equivalent to a Danish master’s degree.

- Conduct independent research under supervision
- Completion of approximately 30 ECTS PhD courses
- Participation in international research collaborations
Option B: Integrated MSc and PhD Programme (3+5 Scheme)
This option is designed for applicants who hold a Bachelor’s degree equivalent to a Danish bachelor’s degree but do not yet have a master’s degree.
Programme structure:
- Up to five years total duration
- Simultaneous enrollment in a master’s programme and PhD programme
- Initial funding includes state education grants and salary for academic work
- After completion of the MSc degree, the candidate transitions to full PhD employment terms
Responsibilities of PhD Fellows
PhD fellows at IFRO will be expected to:
- Conduct an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD coursework corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS
- Participate in international research environments and collaborations
- Spend time at another research institution, preferably abroad
- Teach and contribute to knowledge dissemination
- Publish research findings in academic journals
- Write and defend a PhD thesis
Salary and Employment Conditions
Employment conditions follow the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).
