About the position

Position as PhD Research Fellow in Systemic Environmental Risk Analysis of Hydrogen available at the Department of Technology Systems. The fellowship period is three years. A fourth year may be considered and it will involve 25 % of other career-promoting work. Other career-promoting work may consist of teaching, supervision, and/or research assistance. This is dependent upon the qualification of the applicant and the current needs of the department. Starting date no later than October 1, 2026. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Place of work is the Department of Technology Systems at Kjeller, Lillestrøm.

Job description

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on a research project focusing on systemic environmental risks associated with hydrogen infrastructure, based at the department of Technology Systems (ITS) University of Oslo (UiO). This PhD project aims to advance understanding of how the large-scale deployment of hydrogen infrastructure interacts with environmental systems at the European and global level, and how such interactions can generate systemic environmental risks. These risks arise not from individual technologies in isolation, but also from cumulative effects, cross-sectoral interactions, and long-term dynamics linking energy systems, emissions pathways, and environmental constraints. Hydrogen is a central element of future low-carbon energy systems, with infrastructure developments spanning multiple sectors and regions. This PhD project addresses this academic topic by applying data analysis, energy system and/or environmental modelling frameworks to analyze hydrogen systems as part of an interconnected energy-environment system.
As a PhD candidate, you will develop database and energy/environmental modelling approaches to explore hydrogen deployment pathways at the European or global scale and assess their implications for emissions and environmental performance. The research will involve working with large-scale datasets and may include the use of advanced data analysis or AI-based methods to support modelling, uncertainty analysis, and systemic risk assessment. You will contribute to scientific publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and present your work at international conferences. The PhD project is conducted within a strong interdisciplinary research environment at UiO, with close links to Nordic and international partners. While your main research activities will be based in Norway, you are expected to engage with the wider Nordic research network, participate in collaborative activities, and contribute to knowledge exchange across partner institutions. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of new modelling-based approaches for understanding systemic environmental risks in hydrogen-based energy transitions, with relevance for policy, planning, and sustainable energy system design in Europe and beyond.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials. Required qualifications:
  •  A master’s degree or equivalent in engineering, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, data science, systems modelling, applied mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Strong competence in quantitative methods, modelling, or data-driven analysis
  • Solid programming experience (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB, GAMS or similar)
  • Interest in environmental risk, emissions analysis, and sustainability transitions.  Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research environment.
  • Experience or interest in energy system/environmental modeling or large-scale data analysis is an advantage
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English. Knowledge of Norwegian is beneficial but not required.
Desired qualifications:
  • Experience working with European or global energy and environmental datasets
  • Familiarity with advanced data analytics, uncertainty analysis, energy/ environmental analysis
  • Previous involvement in interdisciplinary research linking energy/ environmental assessment or data analysis
  • Prior scientific publications are beneficial but not required
Candidates without a master’s degree have until June 30, 2026 to complete the final exam. Language requirement: Grade requirements: The norm is as follows:
  • The average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor’s degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The average grade point for courses included in the Master’s degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • The Master’s thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
