University: Eindhoven University of Technology
Location: Eindhoven
Department: Department of Mechanical Engineering
Supervisor: Bas Overvelde
Deadline: July 18, 2026

Position Overview

Eindhoven University of Technology is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the physical control of a soft artificial heart. This interdisciplinary project combines soft robotics, nonlinear dynamics, physics, and control engineering to develop autonomous control strategies for soft robotic hearts being developed within the Holland Hybrid Heart consortium.

The project explores how nonlinear mechanical phenomena such as self-oscillations, self-regulation, and embodied intelligence can be used to create adaptive and reliable soft medical devices. The selected PhD candidate will work within the Autonomous Matter & Machines Lab, part of the Dynamics & Control Section in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Research Focus

The research aims to develop physical control systems for soft artificial hearts powered by compressed fluids such as air or liquids. The candidate will investigate how fluidic circuits with self-oscillatory behavior can generate heartbeat-like dynamics and regulate physiological performance under different conditions.

The work includes:

  • Designing and experimentally implementing fluidic control circuits for soft artificial hearts

  • Developing mechanisms inspired by physiological regulation systems such as the Frank-Starling mechanism and baroreceptor reflex

  • Determining optimal sensor placement and implementing control systems for pump regulation
