Overview

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time PhD fellowship within the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network, SUPER (Sustainable Sports and Physical Activity for Equity and Resilience). This pioneering program explores the intersection of sports science, public health, and sustainability, addressing how physical activity impacts human health and the environment. The project focuses on promoting equity, resilience, and climate-conscious practices in sports, infrastructure, and organizations.

Project Focus

The PhD candidate will join a transdisciplinary research network to investigate the role of sports leaders and organizations as climate advocates. Key research objectives include:

  • Assessing public receptiveness to climate messages delivered by sports leaders and organizations across Europe.

  • Analyzing how healthcare professionals integrate climate advocacy into sports and public health initiatives.

  • Conducting focus groups and case studies to explore willingness and barriers to adopting sustainable practices.

  • Generating actionable insights for sustainable sports management, planetary health, and equitable access to physical activity.

This research aligns with SUPER’s mission to reduce sports’ environmental footprint, foster resilience, and promote sustainable and inclusive physical activity practices.

Responsibilities

The PhD candidate will:

  • Conduct high-quality research leading to a PhD dissertation and scientific publications.

  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.

  • Contribute to the wider SUPER network and collaborative research activities.

  • Participate in educational activities and dissemination efforts related to sustainability, sports, and health.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in social sciences, humanities, health sciences, movement sciences, sports management, psychology, communication sciences, or a related field.

  • Demonstrate strong teamwork skills and a commitment to planetary and public health.

  • Have excellent English proficiency and basic Dutch language skills (minimum B1) to facilitate data collection and communication.

  • Not hold a previous doctoral degree.

  • Comply with mobility requirements: not having resided or worked in Belgium for more than 12 months in the past 36 months (excluding short stays or national service).
