The Surgical & Sterile Services Manager is a mission-critical leadership role responsible for the operational success of our surgical theaters across the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center and the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center.
This role requires a sophisticated balance of administrative oversight, clinical expertise, and educational leadership. You will lead a multidisciplinary team of Technicians and Sterile Processing specialists, ensuring the highest standards of care for both elective and complex, non-elective procedures across a vast range of species.

Core Responsibilities:

Operations & Personnel Leadership

  • Talent Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of staff employment, including recruitment, performance evaluations, and professional development.
  • Logistics: Coordinate complex 24/7 staffing models, managing on-call rotations, PTO, and student schedules to ensure uninterrupted operational readiness.

Clinical Education & Technical Support
  • Instructional Leadership: Direct the training of new employees and DVM students in sterile technique, equipment operation, and SOPs.
  • Surgical Support: Provide technical guidance during complex interventions in specialties such as Neurology, Soft Tissue, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and Cardiology.
  • Advanced Knowledge: Maintain a high level of proficiency in drug calculations, intra-op medication administration, and multi-species surgical protocols.

Compliance, Safety & Asset Management
  • Safety Authority: Serve as the Primary Laser Safety Officer for three medical hospitals, maintaining all safety certifications and leading biannual training.
  • Sterile Integrity: Partner with the Infectious Disease Committee to manage nosocomial culture programs and hospital-wide sterilization policies.
  • Capital Assets: Oversee the maintenance and vendor relationships for high-value surgical instrumentation, including portable C-ARMs, autoclaves, and cautery systems.

The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a high-level professional who excels in fast-paced, academically rigorous environments.
  • Clinical Judgment: Ability to remain composed and exercise sound judgment in emotionally charged or high-stakes clinical situations.
  • Academic Commitment: A genuine interest in the mentorship and development of 4th-year veterinary students.
  • Autonomy: A self-starter capable of managing large-scale hospital systems with minimal supervision.
Environmental & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in an environment involving sick animals, hazardous materials, and gas anesthetics.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds and remain on-site beyond scheduled hours when surgical cases require extended support.
