Job Summary

The Office of the Dean is accepting applications for an academic advisor within the College of Health Sciences. The advisor will report to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and provide guidance to undergraduate students in the College’s majors, minors, and pre-professional programs.

The advisor’s main responsibilities include advising first-year, transfer, and continuing students on academic planning, course selection, requirements for their program, and campus resources. They will help students transition to college, complete general education and major requirements, and prepare for admission to further programs if needed.

The advisor will communicate regularly with advisees, academic departments, the Dean’s office, and other advising staff. They will assist students in choosing a major, understanding application processes, and advising on developmental and career matters. In addition, the advisor will perform other duties as assigned to support student success.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • General knowledge of the academic advisement process in higher education.
  • Knowledge of or ability to become proficient in the most commonly used ETSU advising tools, including, but not limited to: Banner, Goldlink, Degree Works, and Navigate.
  • Knowledge of or ability to become proficient in ETSU policies, processes, and resources related to advisement and student success.
  • Ability to work with students with a wide variety of abilities and backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to think objectively and solve problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of an advisement team.
  • Ability to be flexible in a changing and fast-paced environment. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited or equivalent university.
  • One (1) year of experience working with students in a higher education setting as a full-time employee or graduate assistant

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree
  • 2 years of experience in higher education academic advisement or counseling;
  • Experience in advising students in health programs, or programs with similarly competitive admission processes.
