FACULTY POSITION IN GENERAL MUSIC EDUCATION BEGINNING AUGUST 2027

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Music Education, tenure-track

RANK AND SALARY: Competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Butler University School of Music, Jordan College of the Arts, is inviting applications and nominations for Assistant Professor of General Music Education. This is a tenure-track position. Primary responsibilities include teaching elementary general music methods, secondary general music methods, and other undergraduate and/or graduate music education courses in the music education curriculum. In addition, there is an expectation of connection with local and regional music educators, programs, and associations. Academic advising, student mentoring, committee participation, and community service are expected of the successful candidate. The ability to teach courses in a secondary area would be valued. Continuing excellence in teaching, service, and scholarly activity is expected to qualify for reappointment, tenure, and promotion.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in music and a minimum of three years of successful, elementary general music teaching experience. 

  • Training and/or certification in various traditional general music teaching approaches (e.g., Orff, Kodaly, Feierabend, Gordon) is expected. 

  • Experience in emergent areas (e.g., popular music pedagogies, world music pedagogies, applied technology, music production, community music, culturally responsive/sustaining pedagogies, etc.)

  • Experience working in diverse teaching settings is highly desired.

  • Experience with virtual teaching is expected.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctorate in music education.

  • A record of effective college-level teaching.

  • Developing or established record of scholarly activity.
