The Academic Retention Specialist will provide direct service to students using the Tribal Nations Student Affairs (TNSA) office who require extensive academic support. This position will assist with managing the Indigenous Scholars Training for Excellence Program (INSTEP). The TNSA Academic Retention Specialist is expected to work closely with the staff in the University Advising Services, Student Support Services, Counseling and Testing Center, and other departments to provide the support services needed for the retention and completion of the student's undergraduate degree. This position facilitates workshops, support groups and orientation activities and completes other duties as assigned by the Tribal Nations Student Affairs Director.

- Meeting students on a regular basis to monitor academic progress
- Assessing and coordinating academic tutoring opportunities for students
- Overseeing daily study tables
- Guiding and mentoring students in exploration of their choice of majors and coursework
- Advising and mentoring students on personal, financial, social, tribal and academic related matters
- Researching scholarship and internship opportunities
- Co-teaching the TNSA Fall seminar course
- Collaborating with university resources and personnel to provide students with comprehensive and appropriate services
