Position vacancy Announcement: 

Florida A&M University is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for the Senior Refrigeration Mechanic-1 vacancy.
  • Responsibilities

Perform preventive and repair maintenance on above and below ground HVAC and Distribution systems and equipment, including, but not limited to, the following equipment, components and accessories: steam pressure reducing and flow control valves; Chilled water piping and systems beginning at the water chiller and ending at the first valve(s) inside the buildings; Condenser water piping and pumps; Heat exchangers and converters; Steam and chilled water valves; Strainers; Separators; Filters; Thermostatic air vents; Pressure gauges and snubbers; Coil siphons; Steam unit heaters; Electric condensate pumps; Pressure operated condensate pumps; Condensate receivers; Schedule 40 and 80 piping; Pipe hangars and saddles; Various types of steam traps; Insulating materials for steam, condensate and chilled and domestic water lines; and manhole repairs of piping, gaskets, valves and insulation.


Act as temporary supervision when needed; Operate Energy Management systems of various manufacturers; Provide “Mandatory On-Call Service” as assigned by the service shop supervisor; Mandatory On-Call Service may be on weekends, holidays or after normal working hours; and the current available staff, serving in the Plant Operations and Maintenance Service Shop, dictates this schedule.


The duties and responsibilities of Mandatory On-Call Service are the same as those performed during normal working hours; Response time for answering a “page” for on-call employees is a maximum of 30 minutes; Perform technical preventive maintenance, diagnose and troubleshoot problems with assigned equipment and systems on all HVAC and Mechanical systems and equipment as described above; and inspect and maintain all equipment used in the Plant Operations and Maintenance Department, including the Steam/Water Distribution shop.

  • Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and five years of related experience and two years of related experience must have been working with digital control systems; or Completion of an approved program in digital controlled air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating and related experience to total five years; or Appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

  • Recommended Competencies

Knowledge of the many types of pipes and sizes, and insulation products for installing and repairing of equipment;

Ability to use manufacturer’s manuals in preventive maintenance programs;

Ability to adjust valves, check pressure regulators, reducing valves, switches, and electric controls for optimum performance;

Ability to perform maintenance on steam and chilled water equipment and accessories;

Skilled in adjusting valves, checking pressure regulators and reducing valves, switches, and electric controls for optimum performance;

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and,
Ability to bend, kneel and lift a minimum of 25 pounds.

In accordance with Florida Statute 112.219, relevant work experience may substitute for the required education: 4 years of experience in lieu of a Bachelor’s, or 6 years in lieu of a Master’s.
