A PhD position in Applied Physics is available at Linkoping University, based at Campus Norrköping, Sweden. The doctoral project will be conducted within the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE), a globally recognized center for research at the intersection of organic electronics, bioelectronics, materials science, and biomedical engineering.

Research Focus: Bioelectronics and Brain Tissue Interfaces

This doctoral research centers on next-generation bioelectronic implants designed to study and modulate the brain tissue microenvironment. The project builds on advances in electrophoretic and iontronic drug delivery systems and soft neural electrodes formed through in situ polymerization. The aim is to develop implantable technologies for neuromodulation and localized drug delivery with high spatial and temporal precision.

A key objective is to establish mechanistic design rules for bioelectronic interfaces by understanding ionic and molecular transport at the implant–tissue interface. By analyzing how transport phenomena influence electrode formation and local dose distribution, the research will support optimization and long-term clinical translation of bioelectronic implants.

Scope of Work

The PhD candidate will develop both experimental and computational platforms to model and measure transport processes in brain-like tissue systems. Approximately 70% of the work will involve experimental laboratory research and 30% computational modeling.

Core tasks include:

  • Design and fabrication of 3D-printed brain-mimetic tissue models with tunable transport properties
  • Development of experimental methods to study spatiotemporal transport across implant–tissue interfaces
  • 3D cell culture and biological evaluation of transport-driven responses
  • Multiphysics modeling and simulation using finite element methods in COMSOL Multiphysics
  • Validation of computational models against experimental data

The research integrates applied physics, biophysics, organic electronics, biomaterials, and neuroengineering.

Academic Background and Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in applied physics, biomedical engineering, biophysics, materials science, organic chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Equivalent advanced coursework totaling at least 240 credits, including 60 credits at advanced level, is also acceptable.

Strong problem-solving ability, teamwork skills, and effective communication are essential. Experience in cell biology, neurobiology, tissue models, microfabrication, 3D printing of soft materials, microscopy, cell culture, or finite element modeling (such as COMSOL Multiphysics) is advantageous.

Research Environment

The Laboratory of Organic Electronics at Linköping University hosts more than 150 researchers across multiple interdisciplinary groups in an open and collaborative laboratory setting. The project will be supervised by Assistant Professor Theresia Arbring Sjöström and Professor Daniel Simon within the Organic Bioelectronics group.

The department is part of Linköping University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and is located at Campus Norrköping along the Motala Ström river.

Employment Terms

The doctoral employment corresponds to four years of full-time study, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching or departmental duties (maximum 20%). Salary follows a locally negotiated progression for PhD students in Sweden.
