Overview
The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is offering a three-year PhD position in Landscape Architecture focusing on large-scale landscape changes. The research will examine how landscapes in Norway are transformed by energy projects, infrastructure development, climate adaptation, and resource extraction, and how landscape architecture can guide sustainable planning and decision-making.
This doctoral project is ideal for candidates interested in landscape ecology, ethical and aesthetic considerations, visualisation, scenario modelling, and sustainable land-use transitions, with a strong connection to the Norwegian context.
Research Focus
The PhD project may address one or a combination of the following areas:
- Landscape ecological approaches: ecological design, conservation, and nature restoration
- Ethical and aesthetic considerations: evaluating spatial and temporal dimensions of landscape restoration, conservation, and creation
- Representation, visualisation, and scenario modelling: methods to communicate landscape changes effectively
- Sustainable land-use transitions: integrating interdisciplinary knowledge and multiple perspectives on landscape
Candidates are encouraged to develop a project proposal that reflects their interests while addressing these themes.
Key Responsibilities
As a PhD candidate, you will:
- Develop a project plan and conduct literature research
- Collect and analyse data related to large-scale landscape changes
- Write scientific articles and a PhD thesis
- Complete compulsory and elective doctoral courses (30 ECTS)
- Work closely with a team of supervisors
- Plan the research progress with the goal of completing the PhD within the scholarship period
The position is research-focused and does not include teaching duties.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field (five-year Norwegian degree equivalent)
- Strong academic record (GPA minimum B; Master’s thesis minimum B)
- Proficiency in English (oral and written)
- Eligibility for admission to the PhD program in Society, Development and Planning at NMBU
Desirable:
- Understanding of Norwegian society and landscape challenges
- Experience in landscape design, development, or management
- Research experience and ability to communicate research
- Proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language
Personal attributes:
- Commitment and motivation to complete a PhD
- Ability to work independently and in a structured manner
- Interest in contributing to a strong scientific work environment
- Ambition to engage internationally in the field of landscape architecture
Employment and Salary
- Position code 1017: PhD Fellow
- Gross salary: NOK 550,800 per year (higher for exceptionally qualified candidates)
- Fixed-term, starting September 1, 2026
- Office presence on campus is required
- Employment follows national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars
