Location: Loughborough, United Kingdom
Department: Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering
Supervisor: Dr. Zhiqiang Niu
Application Deadline: August 31, 2026
Project Overview
All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are considered next-generation energy storage technologies because of their:
-
Enhanced safety
-
High energy density
-
Long cycle life
However, performance critically depends on electrode microstructure, where ion/electron transport, mechanical stresses, and electrochemical reactions are tightly coupled.
This PhD focuses on multi-scale modelling and design of solid-state battery electrodes to optimise performance.
Research Objectives and Methods
The candidate will investigate structure–performance relationships in ASSB electrodes through:
-
Multi-physics Simulation with COMSOL Multiphysics
-
Coupled electrochemical–thermal–mechanical modelling of electrodes
-
Modelling solid–solid interfaces, ion transport limitations, and stress generation
-
-
Electrode Structure Design and Optimisation
-
Parametric studies on porosity, particle size distribution, and layer thickness
-
Optimisation of composite electrode design to balance ionic/electronic conductivity and mechanical stability
-
The project will establish design principles for high-performance solid-state lithium battery electrodes.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should have:
-
A Master’s degree in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
-
Experience or interest in multi-physics modelling, battery materials, or electrode design
-
Strong analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills
-
Ability to work independently and collaborate in interdisciplinary teams
Candidates are encouraged to pursue external funding, including scholarships such as the China Scholarship Council (CSC), with attention to strict deadlines.
