University of Amsterdam – Amsterdam, Netherlands
Department: Faculty of Economics and Business
Supervisor: [email protected]
Application Deadline: March 31, 2026
Overview
The University of Amsterdam invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Operations Research, focusing on innovative mathematical methods for optimizing tax systems. This research project aims to develop computational and mathematical models that enhance transparency, efficiency, and equity in complex national tax systems. The PhD project is embedded in a broader context of fiscal policy optimization, data-driven public administration, and applied operations research.
Research Context
Modern tax systems in developed economies have become increasingly complex, with multiple rules, exceptions, and interactions. Policymakers face challenges in predicting the consequences of reforms, balancing equity with economic efficiency, and designing tax policies that are socially and politically feasible.
The project leverages advanced optimization techniques, mathematical modeling, and computational algorithms to transform current tax systems into data-driven, robust, and evidence-based frameworks. Collaborations with the Dutch Ministry of Finance, the UK Tax Authority, and the World Bank provide practical and international relevance.
Key objectives of this research include:
-
Scaling optimization methods for national and multi-year tax datasets.
-
Integrating behavioral effects, deductibles, and reform scenarios.
-
Enhancing tools for evidence-based policymaking using advanced techniques such as robust optimization, problem decomposition, and constraint learning.
-
Bridging the gap between mathematical rigor, policy relevance, and practical tax administration.
Responsibilities
The PhD candidate will:
-
Conduct original research in operations research, optimization, and tax system modeling.
-
Develop mathematical methods to improve tax reform planning, bracket optimization, and policy scenario evaluation.
-
Collaborate with researchers, policymakers, and international partners to ensure real-world applicability.
-
Publish results in leading management science, operations research, and economics journals.
-
Present research findings at international conferences.
-
Participate in teaching activities, including tutorials and supervision of MSc theses.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should meet the following qualifications:
-
Master’s degree in Business Analytics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Operations Research, or a related quantitative field.
-
Strong programming skills, particularly in Python, and experience with computational modeling.
-
Excellent written and oral communication in English, with academic writing experience preferred.
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with interest in optimization applied to economic and tax systems.
-
Motivation to pursue an international research career with societal impact.
-
Ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and government stakeholders.
Preferred qualifications:
-
Prior exposure to economics, taxation, or policy analysis.
-
Experience in mathematical modeling, large-scale optimization, or applied operations research.
-
Intellectual curiosity, adaptability, and openness to feedback.
Employment and Benefits
-
Full-time PhD position for four years, with a probation period of 18 months.
-
Gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881, with holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
-
Access to professional development, international research visits, and top-tier academic supervision.
-
Participation in a vibrant, international academic environment at the University of Amsterdam, fostering research excellence in operations research, business analytics, and economic optimization.
-
Opportunities to engage with industry partners, governmental institutions, and global research networks.
