The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) invites applications for two fully funded PhD scholarships within cow–calf contact (CCC) systems in dairy production. The positions are hosted by the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences, Faculty of Biosciences, in Ås, Norway.

About the Position
The project, “Connections – Impact of bonding time on welfare and productivity of cow and calf”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, aims to improve understanding of how cow–calf contact systems can enhance animal welfare and productivity in dairy farming. The research will provide insights to implement CCC systems effectively in Norway and internationally, contributing to more sustainable and ethical dairy production.
Two PhD positions are available, each focusing on a distinct thematic area:
- Health-focused PhD: Investigating animal health, productivity, and physiological outcomes in cow–calf contact systems.
- Ethology-focused PhD: Exploring behavioral and welfare aspects of cow–calf interactions.
Candidates should indicate their preferred thematic focus in the application. Both positions involve participation in animal trials at the Livestock Production Research Centre, as well as research stays, courses, and conferences abroad.
Main Tasks
- Plan and conduct animal trials, including associated analyses
- Process research data and publish results in scientific publications and as a PhD thesis
- Complete mandatory courses for the PhD programme
- Present research at internal seminars, workshops, and international conferences
- Develop a structured progress plan to achieve the PhD within the scholarship period
Required Qualifications
Applicants must meet the admission criteria for NMBU’s PhD programme and hold:
- A relevant Master’s degree or cand.med.vet. degree in animal science, veterinary science, biology, ethology, or a closely related discipline
- Strong academic performance in previous studies
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
Additional experience and skills emphasized:
- Practical experience with farm animals, ideally in farm animal trials
- Knowledge of modern dairy production systems
- Data handling and statistical analysis skills
- Experience in animal behavior or laboratory analyses
- Certification to conduct animal experiments on cows
Personal Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Ability to work independently and systematically
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Motivation to pursue a PhD in this research field
- Structured and organized approach to work, managing multiple tasks and deadlines
- Willingness to participate in national and international research stays

About the Faculty of Biosciences (BIOVIT)
The Faculty of Biosciences at NMBU focuses on advancing sustainable food and bioproduction through teaching and research in biology, plant, and livestock sciences. BIOVIT operates seven research groups, covering genetics, nutrition, physiology, ethology, and sustainable food systems, as well as seven laboratory and research support units.
The faculty offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs in animal science, plant science, and related fields, hosting approximately 550 bachelor’s and master’s students and 90 PhD students, supported by 230 staff members.
