Department and Research Environment

The position is based at the Division of Space Technology within the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Technology in Kiruna.

The division offers Master’s programs in Space Science and Technology and conducts research in:

  • Atmospheric science
  • Space systems engineering
  • Spacecraft, payloads, and launchers
  • Upper atmosphere and planetary exploration

Research is supported by advanced laboratory facilities for:

  • Rocket propulsion
  • Small satellites (pico, nano, micro satellites)
  • Asteroid engineering
  • Space avionics

Subject Area: Space Systems

Space systems research focuses on control, instrumentation, and communication technologies for use in the upper atmosphere and space. Special emphasis is placed on:

  • Radiation-resistant, low-power electronic systems
  • Miniaturization technologies
  • Reliable space avionics and instrumentation

Project Description

In 2026, LTU will launch an interdisciplinary regional development initiative linked to the Campus Totalförsvar program. The goal is to provide applied, needs-driven research supporting dual-use actors in Norrbotten and Västerbotten counties.

This PhD project focuses on space-related solutions for monitoring and supporting critical infrastructure, including:

  • Energy supply
  • Water systems
  • Logistics and resource allocation
  • Industrial production
  • Crisis preparedness systems

The objective is to enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure in emergency and crisis scenarios through advanced space-based technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a PhD student in Space Systems, you will:

  • Conduct experimental and theoretical research
  • Design, develop, or support operations of small spacecraft missions
  • Publish in scientific journals and present at international conferences
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research collaborations
  • Potentially contribute to teaching (up to 20%)

Most working time will be dedicated to doctoral research and coursework.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering or a closely related field
  • Experience with small satellite missions (pico, nano, or micro satellites), including design, development, or operations of satellite hardware or software
  • Strong written and oral English communication skills

Employment Conditions

  • Fully funded 4-year PhD position
  • Possible teaching and departmental duties (maximum 20%)
  • Placement in Kiruna, Sweden
  • Start date by agreement
